History often remembers the breakthrough but rarely the room where it happened. The launch of a satellite, the development of a vaccine, the fabrication of a semiconductor chip, or a scientific discovery that reshapes an industry usually captures the headlines. Hidden behind each achievement is an environment designed with extraordinary precision, where airflow, pressure, temperature, humidity, and contamination are controlled so meticulously that success depends as much on the facility as it does on the people working inside it.
Few professionals have spent their careers creating these highly specialized environments as extensively as Swapan K Chatterjee. Through CGMP Projects, he has helped deliver advanced cleanrooms, research laboratories, pharmaceutical facilities, semiconductor nanotech infrastructure, and high-containment environments that support critical scientific and technological progress across India.
Engineering the Invisible Foundations of Progress
For Swapan, innovation has never been about following industry trends; it has always been about identifying challenges before they become obstacles and developing practical solutions that create lasting impact. Throughout his career, he has believed that meaningful progress comes from staying one step ahead of industry requirements, studying real-world problems, and transforming complex challenges into implementable solutions. This philosophy eventually became the foundation upon which CGMP Projects was built.
Since establishing CGMP Projects in 2014, Swapan has focused on delivering highly specialized infrastructure that enables scientific research, advanced manufacturing, healthcare innovation, and technological development. Through expertise in cleanrooms, semiconductor laboratories, GMP facilities, BSL-3 laboratories, and other mission-critical environments, he has helped create the sophisticated infrastructure required for some of India’s most important scientific and industrial advancements.
Building Solutions Beyond Conventional Engineering
For Swapan, the creation of CGMP Projects was driven by a commitment to continuous innovation and problem-solving. He believes that organizations must constantly strive to remain ahead of industry requirements by identifying real-world challenges, conducting extensive research, implementing practical solutions, and continuously improving upon them.
This mindset has shaped the company’s approach to engineering and project execution, allowing it to develop specialized expertise in sectors where conventional engineering solutions are often insufficient.
Transforming Complexity into Capability
Delivering cleanrooms, semiconductor laboratories, GMP facilities, and BSL-3 laboratories requires far more than technical execution. According to Swapan, success depends on cultivating a culture where every team member treats the organization as their own.
Critical technologies developed for one project are systematically transferred from senior engineers to younger professionals, ensuring continuous knowledge sharing. Swapan personally engages with scientists and researchers to understand their unique challenges and helps develop tailored engineering solutions that address specific requirements.
Regular project reviews, continuous communication, client visits, and direct feedback mechanisms further strengthen project outcomes. Since Cleanroom Engineering is not formally taught in Indian academic institutions, extensive study and rigorous training form a crucial part of the company’s culture. Guided by the belief that “Knowledge is Power,” CGMP has built a workforce capable of executing some of the country’s most complex infrastructure projects.
Powering India’s Semiconductor Ambitions
Swapan views specialized infrastructure as a critical enabler of India’s technological self-reliance. Semiconductor manufacturing and assembly require sophisticated cleanroom environments capable of balancing optimal capital expenditure and operating costs.
The complexity extends beyond cleanrooms to highly specialized gas distribution systems, chemical delivery networks, and SCADA-controlled infrastructure. Recognizing the lack of domestic expertise in these areas, CGMP partnered with an Israeli company to develop advanced capabilities and has since established itself as a provider of these specialized solutions.
The company’s focus remains on delivering reliable, safe, and economically viable designs without compromising operational integrity.
The ISRO Project That Redefined Possibility
Among the many projects completed during his career, Swapan considers the Satellite Assembly Cleanroom at ISRO’s Sriharikota Rocket launch station to be the most transformative.
The project involved the design and construction of a 45-meter-high cleanroom facility, equivalent to a fifteen-storey building, that maintained dust-free and virus-free conditions throughout its entire height. At the time, such a facility had never been executed in India.
Located twelve kilometers away from the mainland and surrounded by dense forest, the facility presented extraordinary engineering challenges. Today, the structure serves as the assembly location for rockets and satellites in a controlled, contamination-free environment before launch.
For Swapan, witnessing India launch satellites assembled within that facility continues to serve as a source of motivation, inspiring further contributions to research infrastructure across IITs, CSIR laboratories, and other scientific institutions.
Leadership Under Extraordinary Circumstances
The COVID-19 pandemic represented one of the most demanding periods in CGMP’s history. While uncertainty affected nearly every sector, Swapan viewed the crisis as an opportunity to contribute through infrastructure development.
The company successfully completed fourteen COVID testing laboratories across remote district hospitals in Odisha despite severe restrictions on personnel movement and transportation.
To support employees during the crisis, preventive healthcare measures, personal protective equipment, and special medical insurance coverage were provided. Strong collaboration was established with district administrations, police departments, and state medical authorities to ensure uninterrupted project execution.
Online coordination meetings were conducted throughout the day, often operating on a near 24-hour schedule. The successful completion of these facilities strengthened team morale and reinforced the organization’s belief in self-reliance and resilience through its “We Will Win (WWW)” philosophy.
CGMP’s contribution during the pandemic received recognition from multiple forums and highlighted the importance of scientific infrastructure during times of national crisis.
Connecting Research with Real-World Implementation
Swapan believes that academic institutions provide the foundational principles of engineering, while practical expertise is developed through field experience, training, implementation, and continuous learning.
To bridge the gap between research and industry, he regularly engages with institutions such as IITs, CSIR laboratories, Biotechnology, Cell and gene therapy and DBT-supported organizations to understand emerging requirements and develop customized cleanroom facilities.
His efforts extend beyond project execution to include vocational training programs, summer internships, guest lectures, and direct engagement with students. By recruiting fresh engineering graduates and providing rigorous classroom and field-based training, he seeks to cultivate the next generation of cleanroom engineering professionals.
Preparing for the Next Technological Revolution
Looking toward the future, Swapan identifies wafer fabrication as one of the most important emerging sectors shaping infrastructure demand in India.
Supported by advancements in nanotechnology and lithography research, wafer fabrication facilities are expected to become increasingly important as artificial intelligence applications continue to expand. He believes these technologies will require sophisticated infrastructure ecosystems capable of supporting future industrial growth and scientific innovation.
Creating Multidisciplinary Engineering Excellence
Cleanroom engineering requires expertise across mechanical, electrical, structural, control systems, instrumentation, software programming, and process engineering disciplines.
Because no dedicated academic curriculum exists for this field in India, Swapan has developed a comprehensive internal training model. Fresh graduates are recruited and undergo extensive classroom instruction delivered by experienced professionals and industry experts.
The second stage involves hands-on site training where senior engineers demonstrate practical implementation techniques. Employees are later rotated across disciplines, allowing them to develop broad technical understanding and cross-functional expertise.
Although the process requires significant time and commitment, Swapan believes it consistently produces highly capable engineering professionals capable of handling complex multidisciplinary projects.
Pride Beyond Recognition
While industry awards such as the India 100 SME Award in 2025 and 2026 and recognition from CCII, ASSOCHAM represent important milestones, Swapan derives greater satisfaction from initiatives capable of creating direct social impact.
One such project involves developing innovative solutions designed to improve farmer incomes by enabling better post-harvest management. He views this initiative as one of the most meaningful endeavours undertaken by the organization and hopes to launch it before the end of the year.
A Career Built on Curiosity and Continuous Learning
For young professionals aspiring to enter high-tech infrastructure and cleanroom engineering, Swapan offers a simple yet powerful philosophy.
He encourages individuals to develop genuine interest in their work, approach professional challenges with enthusiasm, and continuously study and improve. In his view, treating work as an engaging pursuit rather than an obligation creates the foundation for long-term success and professional fulfilment.
Innovation with a Social Purpose
For Swapan, entrepreneurship, innovation, and social responsibilities are deeply interconnected.
He believes innovation should focus on solving present-day challenges while improving quality of life for future generations. Entrepreneurs, in turn, have the responsibility to transform those innovations into practical solutions capable of creating measurable impact.
This philosophy has led to the development of the Farm Freezer initiative, a temperature- and humidity-controlled cold storage system designed specifically for farmers. Equipped with remote monitoring capabilities, the solution enables farmers to store produce at their own premises rather than being forced to sell during periods of oversupply and low market prices.
Currently undergoing trials, the technology is expected to be introduced during late 2026 and has the potential to significantly improve agricultural profitability and help farmers achieve substantially higher incomes.
Supporting India’s Journey Toward Technological Leadership
Swapan’s vision for CGMP Projects in the long run is completely in line with the overall mission of making India a technologically independent nation.
Since its inception, the company has been part of several projects of national importance such as the development of H1N1 vaccine labs, polio eradication labs, and even COVID-19 laboratories among others. Going ahead, the company plans to keep coming up with innovative solutions to overcome any difficulties, thereby enhancing the scientific and technological capabilities of India.
It is through continual improvement, advancement in technology, and implementation that CGMP can assist India in achieving its ambition of becoming a technological superpower by 2047.
