At the heart of an ideal society lies the belief that all individuals, regardless of gender, deserve equal rights, respect, and opportunities. True equality transcends the boundaries of gender, fostering an environment where each person’s dignity is upheld, and their challenges are acknowledged without bias. Yet, in many parts of the world, men’s struggles are often overlooked, their voices silenced, and their rights marginalized. The All Bengal Men’s Forum (ABMF), under the visionary leadership of Nandini Bhattacharjee, is on a mission to change that narrative.
The All Bengal Men’s Forum (ABMF) is at the forefront of addressing a critical yet often overlooked issue in India: the rights and dignity of men. The organization’s work has become a beacon for those who feel marginalized and oppressed by a legal and social system that Nandini believes has long been biased against men. Nandini and her team have been tirelessly working to create awareness, bring about legal reforms, and provide much-needed support for men facing challenges in various aspects of their lives. Their mission goes beyond just advocating for legal changes; it is about ensuring that men’s voices are heard, their struggles acknowledged, and their dignity upheld.
One of the core issues that ABMF focuses on is the misuse of laws that are intended to protect women but are frequently exploited to harm men. In particular, the anti-dowry laws in India have been widely misused, with many husbands facing false accusations and extortion under these provisions. While dowry abuse is a serious problem in India, the abuse of anti-dowry laws against innocent men has resulted in devastating consequences. This has contributed to a startling increase in the suicide rate among married men, which is nearly double that of women. The pain and suffering of men facing such legal battles often go unnoticed, and ABMF works relentlessly to raise awareness about this issue.
Another significant issue that ABMF addresses is the increasing frequency of domestic violence against men. While domestic violence is often portrayed as a women’s issue, men too are victims of abuse, and their experiences are rarely discussed or taken seriously. Many men face physical,
emotional, or psychological abuse from their partners but are hesitant to report it due to societal stigma, fear of being ridiculed, or the risk of false accusations being made against them. ABMF works to break the silence around this issue, encouraging men to speak out and seek help. The forum aims to create a supportive environment where men can access the resources they need to deal with abuse, whether it is legal assistance, counseling, or simply a safe space to talk about their experiences.
A major part of the work being done by Nandini Bhattacharjee and ABMF is providing legal assistance to men who are struggling with unfair laws. The forum offers basic consultations, legal advice, and connections to a network of lawyers who specialize in men’s rights issues. One of the key moments in the journey of ABMF came when a member approached Nandini with a legal case involving false accusations under the anti-dowry laws. Despite the challenges and the initial lack of support from traditional legal resources, ABMF was able to connect this individual with the right legal support, which eventually led to a favorable outcome.
This is just one example of how ABMF has helped men navigate a complex and often hostile legal system. In many cases, men who face false accusations or are wrongly implicated in domestic violence or dowry cases often feel isolated and helpless. The role of ABMF in connecting these individuals with legal resources, and advocating for their rights, cannot be overstated. The organization also works to raise awareness about the importance of equal punishment for those who misuse the law, ensuring that there are consequences for individuals who make false accusations or manipulate the legal system.
One of the most significant goals of ABMF is the establishment of a Men’s Commission, which would serve as a dedicated body to address the specific challenges that men face in India. This would be a groundbreaking step in recognizing the issues that men encounter, whether it is related to legal rights, social expectations, or personal struggles. A Men’s Commission would be able to advocate for reforms in laws that currently discriminate against men, provide support for those facing gendered violence, and promote awareness of men’s issues at the national level.
Beyond legal and social advocacy, ABMF has also been a vocal critic of the growing phenomenon of misandry—the prejudice against men—similar to misogyny. The movement challenges the stereotypes and societal norms that perpetuate the notion that men are inherently violent, insensitive, or incapable of emotional expression. ABMF works to deconstruct these harmful stereotypes, promoting the idea that men’s dignity is just as important as women’s and that equality means recognizing and addressing the unique challenges that men face.
In this regard, ABMF advocates for a broader societal shift that encourages empathy, understanding, and support for men’s issues. The organization’s work also extends to educating boys and young men about emotional health, the importance of mutual respect in relationships, and the need to reject harmful stereotypes that limit their growth and potential.
ABMF provides a range of services aimed at helping men deal with personal and social challenges. These include legal consultations, social and psychological counseling, and pre- and post-marriage counseling. The forum also serves as a support network, where men can find understanding, guidance, and assistance in dealing with issues related to family, relationships, and mental health.
The work of Nandini Bhattacharjee and ABMF is not only essential for the men who directly benefit from their services but also for society as a whole. By advocating for the rights of men, challenging unfair laws, and promoting gender equality, ABMF is working to create a more just, inclusive, and balanced society. As Nandini and her team continue their tireless efforts, the importance of their work grows, serving as a vital voice for men who have been left behind by a system that often ignores their struggles. The All Bengal Men’s Forum stands as a testament to the power of advocacy, support, and determination in the fight for gender equality and human dignity.
The following is a heartfelt testimony of the incredible support and positive impact provided by Nandini and the ABMF team. These are not just words but lived experiences that speak volumes about the invaluable help extended to individuals who find themselves in challenging legal and personal situations
I joined ABMF about 8 months ago. In 2020, a false 498A & 125 CRPC case was filed against me and my family. At that time, I went to my local advocate and shared everything with him, handing over the case to him. Initially, due to not understanding much, I just listened to his instructions. But the more I interacted with ABMF, the more I understood that I was being misled. I then told him to come to our Men’s Forum office, but he repeatedly said he would come and never did. He also made many efforts not to provide the documents related to my case. When he saw that I started asking him various questions, suddenly the dates for my case started coming up much faster.
Then I realized that in court, the things I had to say, he never prepared the documents to support them. Everything collapsed when, in very little time, the argument date for my 125 cases came up. My advocate had said that there was no chance of anything happening at that point. I informed MRA Anirban Da about everything, and with their help, I was connected to ABMF’s panel lawyers. It was a nearly impossible case. I was given some time for arguments, and with the help of my present lawyer’s mindset and determination, I felt inspired for the next success. I now know that the case date is near, and I will again taste victory and stand tall against those who opposed me. ABMF has given me the courage to face this challenge. Many members of ABMF have been continuously looking out for me, and I can’t explain how my family members haven’t supported me as ABMF has. The commitment to stand by me has only been found with ABMF.
