Guiding Maker & Son India in Creating Value for the Construction Industry!
Every city stands on stories hidden in its bridges, highways, and skylines. Behind those structures are people who dedicate their lives to building foundations that others will walk on. Dr. Chinmoy Mukherjee is one of them. His journey began at Bridge & Roof Co (India) Limited, where he worked on projects that powered industries and connected lives, from thermal plants and oil and gas sites to metro railways and roads.
Over 3 decades in the construction world gave him more than technical knowledge. It gave him the belief that construction is not only about erecting structures, but about creating long-lasting value for society. After 34 years of civil engineering and techno-commercial expertise, he chose a new path. In 2024, he took over the India operations of Maker & Son Private Limited, stepping into a role where vision and leadership could meet action.
Within a year, the company expanded to a team of 300 direct and indirect employees and achieved a turnover of ₹15 crores. While these numbers are impressive, for Dr. Chinmoy they are simply milestones on the path to a greater purpose, nation building through specialized work in the construction industry.
His approach blends the discipline of an engineer with the foresight of a leader. He values hard work, integrity, and the collective strength of his team as the real foundation of success.
Dr. Chinmoy’s story is proof that when experience and purpose come together, the result is more than growth. It is the creation of opportunities, trust, and a future where every structure carries a piece of the builder’s vision.
The Power of Collective Leadership
As a techno-commercial professional and a visionary leader, Dr. Chinmoy possesses the rare ability to recognize the deeper insights of a commercial establishment and guide it accordingly.
He believes that the freedom to work, along with the right delegation of power, forms the foundation of organizational success. For him, leadership is never about the individual. The use of “we” instead of “I” at the workplace reflects his conviction that achievements belong to the collective, never a single person.
A Journey of Evolution Through Diverse Professional Landscapes
The career path began within a Central Government Public Sector Undertaking, laying the foundation for a professional journey that expanded across finance, administration, and eventually Human Resources. Academic excellence remained a steady companion throughout this path, reflected in qualifications such as B.Tech Civil, MSW, MBA, LL.B., and a series of specialised diplomas. Further studies, including a Diploma in Industrial Relations, a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights, and a doctorate, added depth and perspective.
The move towards Human Resources emerged as more than a professional choice. It echoed a lifelong curiosity and a spirit of exploration. Much like cycling, motorbiking, or walking shaped the rhythm of earlier years, each role reflected a new terrain with unique demands and opportunities for learning.
At Petron Civil Engineering Limited in Mauritius, the challenge of managing FRRO formalities for a large skilled workforce within strict timelines revealed both adaptability and precision. This was followed by a role at ESSAR Projects Ltd., where responsibilities ranged from negotiating with multiple unions to addressing complex land acquisition issues in Paradip. Leading rehabilitation efforts for local communities while enabling the development of a steel plant showcased a balance of empathy and strategic decision-making.
A later tenure at Larsen & Toubro Limited strengthened a belief in social responsibility through meaningful contributions to CSR programmes. This commitment eventually led to the present role at Barbrik Project Limited, where as Group CHRO and Vice President, Corporate Communication, responsibilities extend to insurance claims, risk management, business development, and liaisoning.
The professional journey illustrates resilience and adaptability in the face of complexity. It is a narrative shaped by diverse industries, continuous growth, and a commitment to aligning professional excellence with human values.
Flexibility at the Core of Modern Work
The way people engage with work has transformed in recent years, with remote and hybrid models moving from temporary solutions to permanent expectations. What earlier appeared as an additional benefit has now become a central element of professional life, shaping how individuals experience balance between personal and professional spaces.
Dr. Chinmoy highlights that this transformation goes deeper than geography or physical presence. It signals a cultural evolution that influences collaboration, trust, and the measurement of productivity itself. Flexibility now stands as a decisive factor, essential for organizations that aim to attract and retain talent in an environment defined by constant change.
Building Workplaces that Inspire the Next Generation
The creation of a workplace that appeals to Gen Z and millennials calls for a thoughtful balance of inclusion, opportunity, and adaptability. It begins with diversity, equity, and inclusion policies that reflect fairness, followed by structured paths for career advancement, fair compensation, and the freedom to work with flexibility. Open channels of communication further strengthen this foundation.
For Gen Z in particular, timely assessment in line with the external environment holds great importance. Alongside this, training initiatives and leadership programmes that highlight inclusivity and variety play a vital role. Such measures align closely with their desire for independence, growth, and continuous learning. The result is a professional space where they experience both recognition and encouragement, allowing them to progress with confidence in their careers as well as their personal development.
Forming Resilient HR Practices for a Changing Workforce
The world of human resources continues to face pressing challenges, from bringing the right people on board to keeping them engaged and motivated. Leadership development and the building of a healthy corporate culture demand equal attention. With HR taking on a more strategic role, the work requires constant dedication and a balance of time and energy.
Dr. Chinmoy highlights that unresolved dynamics between employers and employees, the growing need for technology-driven HR solutions, and the struggle to attract talent in a competitive market remain central issues. He believes the way forward lies in reimagining recruitment with innovation, cultivating a culture that inspires, investing in leaders who can guide with vision, and shaping HR practices that can adapt to change. Together, these steps form the foundation for progress and sustainable success.
A Vision for Technology-Driven Human Resources
Over the next five years, Dr. Chinmoy envisions a workplace where automation and artificial intelligence serve as strong pillars of human resource management.
His focus is on enabling HR professionals to engage more deeply with strategic priorities that form the direction of organisations. Through innovative planning and thoughtful use of technology, his aim is to accelerate growth while creating a richer and more fulfilling experience for employees.
